Reed durability results from the fact that it contains the wax components and additionally, the increased silica contents in the lower part of the spire during ripening causing the thickening and strengthening the walls. It results in the high resistance to the weather conditions as well as it increases the fire resistance.
Thermal insulation. The roofing about 35cm thick guarantees the better insulation than any other material used for that purpose, therefore the reed roofing does not need any additional thermal insulation. The reed roofing about 35cm thick has the same insulation properties as 100mm mineral wool insulation placed under the traditional roofing. Reed and straw have the lowest thermal conductance among all known thermal insulation materials. It is possible due to the fact that the spire is full of air, which has the lowest thermal conductance.

Thickness of the reed roofing depends directly on the angle of roof inclination as well as on the reed parameters. Tightness. The reed roofing is in 100% tight. Standard roofing about 35cm thick is penetrated by the rain up to 8 cm deep as the maximum. It is possible due to the appropriate, very compact placement and fixation of the reed on the roof, the angle of inclination of which must guarantee the fluent flow-down of the rainwater. The reed is placed in that way, the water to be able to flow down on the very tips of the reed only. Due to that fact, the surface has become dry quickly after the rain. Chimneys and other roof opening are finished using the sheet metal.
Ventilation. The reed roofing “breathes” naturally both in the case when the reed is fixed directly to the joists and in the case of boarding. To the boards are fastened the joists on the counter-joists, what gives the possibility of the natural air circulation under the reed roofing and it prevents the appearance of moistening inside.
